Delayed but not Denied

Hope deferred maketh the heart sick but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.

-Proverbs 13:12

What’s the one thing you always wanted but has seemed impossible to obtain?

That one thing that you know can’t be purchased with money?

Maybe it seems as if every time you muster the strength to reach for the thing you desire, it comes so close—close enough to feel within reach—yet it slips away, leaving you to question if the promise will ever be fulfilled.

What do you do when what you’ve hoped for, prayed for, maybe even sacrificed for turns out to be just another hopeless dream.

Josephs Journey

If we take a moment to consider Joseph’s story, we see a profound example of favor, perseverance, and divine purpose. Joseph was deeply loved by his father and given a gift of a coat of many colors which symbolized great distinction and purpose. But what he did not know, was that this favor would come with jealousy. His own brothers, consumed by envy, cast him into a pit, sold him into slavery, which set him on a path of unimaginable hardship.

Joseph endured betrayal, false accusations of rape, and imprisonment. Yet, even in the darkest moments, when freedom and reunion with his family seemed impossible, he remained steadfast.

While in prison, Joseph didn’t allow bitterness or despair to overtake him. Instead, he served diligently. He proved to be a man of integrity, strength, faith, and unwavering character. In every season of waiting and testing, Joseph chose to honor God, trusting in His plan.

When the appointed time had come, Joseph was not only set free but restored to a place and position greater than he could have ever hoped or imagined. He was elevated to second-in-command over Egypt, and entrusted with abundant wealth and responsibility.

Undoubtedly, Joseph faced moments of discouragement and disappointment. He must have wrestled with feelings of giving up when his hopes and dreams felt distant. Yet, instead of allowing his heart grow weary, he surrendered his desires to God and served faithfully in every circumstance. His determination to please God outweighed his personal frustrations and unmet longings.

This delivers to us a powerful revelation that when we yearn for something deeply or feel incomplete, the answer lies not in the fulfillment of our desires but in discovering our purpose. God often uses our desires to draw us closer to Him, reminding us that we need Him more than we need the thing we seek.

While many of our desires are God-given, He often takes us through a process of preparation before fulfilling them. That process refines us, reveals areas in our lives that need transformation, and aligns our hearts with His purpose. Sometimes, the delays we experience are God’s way of shifting our focus from earthly fulfillment to a more eternal perspective.

We can become so consumed by our unmet desires that we pursue fulfillment from things never intended to satisfy. True fulfillment comes from God alone. In the waiting, give thanks. Trust His timing, remembering all that He has already done in your life. Let your heart rejoice and your soul prosper in the knowledge of His faithfulness.

Joseph’s story reminds us that in every circumstance, he sought to please God. He surrendered his desires, his pain, and his purpose to the Lord. Because of this, God’s hand remained with him, and he found favor with both the Lord and man.

From his youth and young adulthood, Joseph developed and utilized the gifts God gave him. He served others diligently, allowing his gifts to shine even in the darkest moments, all while keeping his focus on bringing glory to the Lord.

In spite of his circumstances, God proved Himself faithful to Joseph, and He will fulfill the same commitment to you. Trust His process, stay encouraged, and allow God’s purposes to unfold in His perfect time.

While our journeys may not mirror Joseph’s, we can all relate to the pain of hope delayed and the disappointment of unmet expectations.

What makes the difference, is consistently surrendering our desires and heart to the Lord which allows Him to work out the details in His perfect way.

Delay can be a blessing in disguise and God’s way of redirecting our steps toward a better path.

In the process, He uses the waiting to prepare us, stretch us, and develop the character necessary to handle the greater He has in store.

When your desires are fulfilled, they arrive as gifts that give life and produce fruit, much like a flourishing tree. A God-given desire doesn’t just satisfy momentary longings—it establishes you, bringing growth, fruitfulness, and multiplication. It renews your optimism, restores your faith, and revives your heart with a peace that only God can provide.

However, while you wait for the promise to manifest, cultivate a spirit of thankfulness. Reflect on all the ways God has been and is currently faithful in your life, and ask Him how you can serve where you are. Gratitude and service have a way of transforming your perspective, anchoring your heart in purpose even in seasons of waiting.

A key lesson learned from Josephs journey was that his waiting on God was defined by how he served. Waiting isn’t just about receiving the promise—it’s about becoming the person who can steward it well. Trust the process, serve faithfully, and let God shape your heart and desires for His glory.

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God to them who are they called according to his purpose.
